End of Year Review (2007)

Another year just zipped by like that.

TV
Winner: 1 Liter of Tears

American
1) Lost - That flashforward in the season finale was a doozie. I can't wait for the new season.
2) Desperate Housewives - I have only sporadically watched this over the last two years, but season 4 DH is a vastly improved show, comparable to the highs of season 1.

Japanese
1) 1 Liter of Tears - 1 word: tearjerker!!! A very touching drama. I especially love Aya's family. The way they supported Aya, the way they stuck together was very very impressive. This drama made me a fan of Erika Sawajiri. She did such an amazing job with the role. In fact, everyone in the drama did a marvelous job.

Korean
1) Coffee Prince - This was THE kdrama of the year. Very entertaining throughout. Great acting, especially from Gong Yoo who has improved tremendously since the last time I saw him in Hello My Teacher. My only complaint is that the last few episodes lacked tension.
2) Bad Couple - A pleasant surprise for me. It was quite funny watching Shin Eun Gyung trying to snatch Ryu Soo Young. They made a great couple in the series (even more so than the Coffee Prince couple imo). Ending was a bit too convenient for the main characters though.
3) Thank You - Was very into this series in the beginning, but toward the end I was just not as excited about it. Pretty disappointed with the ending.

TVB
...

Movies
Winner: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

American
1) Ratatouille
2) 3:10 to Yuma

Japanese
These are not necessarily movies that came out this year, but ones I watched this year.
1) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - Very likeable heroine, interesting supporting characters.
2) Linda Linda Linda - Very funny. "Linda linda. Linda linda lindaaa..."
3) Josie, the Tiger, and the Fish - Ending was very bittersweet.
4) 5 Centimeters Per Second - Amazing animation. That alone is worth watching.

Korean
200 Pound Beauty - Another disappointing year for kmovies, but this was very entertaining.

Anime/Manga
1) Claymore

Anime
Aside from Seirei no Moribito, I didn't find much to be too excited about.

Manga
1) Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms - Very moving 1-volume manga about the aftermaths of WWII. It is being adapted into a live-action movie.
2) Claymore - Cool-looking female characters + big swords = kickass!
3) Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle/Xxxholic - This CLAMP combo retains their position from last year :).

Music
Winner: This is so hard to pick, but I ended up choosing Maybee's Fool simply because the music video was very beautifully done. Artist of the year has to be Zia for sure.

Chinese
1) Kay Tse - Zhong Wu Yin
2) Eason Chan - Crying in the Party
3) Stephanie Cheng - Tokyo Plaza

Japanese
Too many songs I like this year (in no particular order)
1) Mai Kuraki - Silent Love
2) Ikimono-gakari - Natsuzora Graffiti
3) melody. - Love Story
4) Kobukuro - Tsubomi
5) Ken Hirai - Kimi no Suki na Toko
6) Ken Hirai - Aika (Elegy)

Anime
Same as above (in no particular order)
1) L'Arc~en~Ciel - Daybreak's Bell (Gundam 00)
2) Tainaka Sachi - Itoshii Hito he (Seirei no Moribito)
3) Rie Fu - Tsukiakari (Darker Than Black)
4) Oku Hanako - Garnet (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)
5) SunSet Swish - Mosaic Kakera (Code Geass)

Korean
Same as above (in no particular order)
1) Epik High - Fan
2) Yoon Gun - The Days Of Being In Debt Because Of Love
3) Yangpa - What Is Love
4) MC the Max - Call Out Love
5) Shin Hye Sung - Erase, Abandon, Forget
6) Zia - Violin
7) Zia - Missing You
8) MayBee - Fool
9) ERU - Because We Are Two
10) Zia - Absentmindedly
11.
End of Year Review (2006)

Wow, it has been awhile since my last entry. Anyway, this is a list of my favorites from 2006.

TV

American
1) Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - Lives up to its hype. Perry and Whitford are great. Wonder if it will return next year though.
2) Grey's Anatomy - A rough start to season 3, but things picked up again the last few episodes.
3) Brothers & Sisters - A surprise hit for me. Emmy-worthy performances from its three lead actresses.

Japanese
Orange Days - Okay, so it did not air in 2006, but the only doramas I saw this year are Orange Days and Long Vacation (started and finished both this month). I absolutely love Orange Days. Love the chemistry between Tsumabuki and Shibasaki. Love the friendship between the Orange no Kai members. Love the "Shanghai Honey" MV. I wonder how many times I have used "love" in this paragraph already. This dorama also makes me want to learn sign language.

Korean
1) Alone in Love - Very atypical k-drama and that's probably because it was based on a Japanese novel. Great performances from the leads and fabulous supporting cast. Very touching and real.
2) What's Up, Fox? - Kim Sam Soon writer does not disappoint. Very daring and funny. Got a bit slow after the two leads got together though.
3) My Girl - I was obsessed with this for awhile. Very funny, but very disappointing last two episodes that put a dark cloud over the drama.

TVB
La Femme Desperado - To me, it is the only one worth mentioning from this year. Pretty good throughout, but lead character by Melissa Ng was a tad annoying. Sheren Tang, Michael Tse and Raymond Lam were great though.

Movies

American
1) Superman Returns
2) The Prestige
3) Casino Royale

Japanese
I don't think I have seen much Japanese movies release this year, so I'll have to go with movies I saw this year.
1) Swallowtail - Amazing Iwai Shunji movie. The beginning was a bit weird, but you soon get swallowed up in the characters' lives. One of the best movies I have ever seen. Rather sad ending though.
2) Nobody Knows - You are heartless if you don't feel anything after watching this movie. Very heartbreaking.
3) Hana & Alice - The movie that started my Iwai Shunji obsession and also got my friend wanting to learn ballet.

Korean
A Dirty Carnival - The only one worthy of being mentioned. 2006 Korean cinema has been very disappointing.

Anime/Manga

Anime
1) Mushishi - Very thought-provoking.
2) Honey & Clover II - A tad on the sad side, but very good nonetheless.
3) The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi - A lot better when watching in chronological order instead of episodic order (IMHO).

Manga
1) Pluto - First Monster, then 20th Century Boy and now this. Urasawa-sensei rules!
2) Yotsuba&! - Almost as good as Azumanga Daioh. Please make an anime adaptation!
3) Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle/Xxxholic - CLAMP strikes gold again.

Music

Chinese
1) Eason Chan - Under Mt. Fuji
2) Eason Chan - Crushing Defeat
3) Eason Chan - To My Friend
...Leo Ku's Belated Love would have been second a couple of months ago, but it is being way overplayed and got annoying.

Japanese
1) TOKIO - Sorafune - Sono fune ...
2) Porno Graffitti - Winding Road - Ayakashi Ayashi ended up sucking, but the song is great anyway.
3) YUKI - Fugainaiya - Weirdly addictive.

Korean
1) Sung Si Kyung - On the Street - Watching the MV reminds me of my trip to Japan.
2) Baek Ji Young - I Don't Love
3) Shinhwa - Once in a Lifetime - Usually not my type of song, but for some reason I really like this.

Tachibana and Chitose's past (POT 309)

Sigh more inconsistencies from Konomi-sensei...

So before the Nationals, An told Kamio that Tachibana's rough play injured his rival's eye and that the rival could never play tennis again...

Translating from polarizm's Chinese summary of 309, we learned that Tachibana and Chitose were teammates and good friends from Shishigaku. At that time, Tachibana was developing a new technique which ended up injuring Chitose's eye. Tachibana felt that Chitose wouldn't have been injured if his new technique was complete. Anyway, because of this, Tachibana quit the team. Then his parents transferred to Tokyo because of their job. After finding out that Chitose started tennis again in Osaka, Tachibana revived the Fudoumine tennis club. So where was the rough play? I thought Tachibana injured his rival because his style of tennis was similar to Kirihara's, deliberately aiming for his opponents. And where was the "could never play tennis again" part? Obviously, Chitose is playing again right now.

Anyway, back to 309, the Singles 2 match starts and Chitose goes SOSA. Tachibana deliberately allowed Chitose's ball to hit his eye...Okay enough with the injury thing already!!! Let's see who has been injured while playing a match...Echizen, Tezuka, Kaidou, Fuji, Momo, Shinji. I sincerely hope that Tachibana won't forfeit the match now! That would be such a cop-out from sensei. We know that Tachibana will lose. The fans are ready to accept that so please don't insult us by having him lose because of forfeit or injury. Tachibana deserves a full match, especially when it is against Chitose so then Tachibana can get past this whole I injured someone thing.

Oh yeah, we also meet Shitenhouji's coach, who is 27 years old.

And I finished reading Katsu! by Adachi. Great manga.

    <lj:music>Shinhwa - Once in a Lifetime</lj:music>

I just spent Saturday reading Adachi's Rough (the entire 12 volumes). Although it isn't as great as H2 (will any of his other work be as great as H2 I wonder), I enjoyed it. I wish he had spent more time on the sport (swimming) than on the romance between Yamato and Ami. My favorite supporting was Ogata. He was so selfless and just such a great guy. Time to move on to Katsu.

Sorry if the post is a bit weird...I am just so tired of studying and just wanted to do something...

So what have I been up to lately?

1. Watching this kdrama called "Alone in Love" starring Son Ye Jin (of A Moment to Remember and The Classic fame) and Gam Woo Sung (from the highest-grossing movie of all time in Korea, The King and the Clown). I absolutely love this drama. It is so different from the typical beautiful boy meets beautiful girl, boy and girl get together and run into problems or can't get together, etc. Son and Gam play a divorced couple who are still in love with each other. Supporting characters include Gam's character's best friend (a OBGYN doctor) and Son's younger sister. The acting is EXCELLENT, the direction is great and the dialogue is very witty and touching.

2. Just read about 25 volumes of Adachi Mitsuru's H2. It was so addictive. It reminds me of Slam Dunk except SD also spotlights on the supporting characters and H2 has romance involved. Anyway, great manga! I really like the Hiro character and I am torn whether he should be with Haruka or Hikari. Next up on my plate, Cross Game.

3. The new POT (308) listed the names of several other Shitenhouji characters as well as the entire lineup between Fudoumine and Shitenhouji.

S1 Shiraishi (captain) vs. Sakurai (Ishida's regular doubles partner)
D1 Hitouji Yuuji (guy with bandana) and Konjiki Koharu (guy with glasses) vs. Mori/Uchimura
S2 Chitose Senri vs. Tachibana (YAY YAY!!!) Let's hope sensei doesn't cop out.
D2 Kenya/Gin defeated Kamio/Ishida. Kenya/Gin were leading 4-0 when the Fudoumine were forced to retire.
S3 Kintarou defeated Shinji (same as D2...Shinji retired)

He is Tetsu's older brother and he taught Tetsu the Hadoukyuu...

After last week's boring chapter, this one was actually pretty exciting.
Just watched the third episode of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. I won't be watching this show anymore. It is just not the type of show I would watch. Also dropping Nana and Digimon Savers. I am already reading the manga so I don't think I will be missing much from not watching Nana. It is really hard to want to watch something when you already know what is going to happen. As for Digimon Savers, it is just blah. If I hear it gets better later on, I'll watch it again.

Saw the first episode of Himawari. I really like the character designs but the episode was mediocre at best. The opening scene was cool though.

So far I am definitely keeping Zegapain and Ouran. There are a couple of shows that haven't been subbed yet but I am interested in watching.

I have heard great things about this series on anime blogs and forums and so decided to watch the first two episodes. The animation is really nice, voice acting is great but I am not sure if I like this. While there are some really laugh-out-loud moments in each of the episodes, on the whole I didn't think the episodes themselves were that great. I'll watch a couple more to decide whether I'll follow this, but most likely I won't.

Other things: In case people are wondering, PoT manga is returning next week with chapter 306. Hopefully that will be the Fudoumine vs. Shitenhouji match. These past few months, I have been watching this kdrama called Spring Waltz. Just learned today that the drama will be delayed because Daniel Henney accidentally broke Suh Do-young's cheekbone while filming the punch scene for episode 12. SDY is gonna have an operation soon. I wish him a speedy recovery. The extremely hyped TVB series Dance of Passion will start airing on May 1st. I can't wait!

Took a study break and saw the first episodes of Nana and Digimon Savers.

Nana 1 - I am a huge fan of the manga. I was incredibly disappointed with the live-adaptation movie (although I love the music), so I was a bit cautious coming into the first episode. Fortunately, the first episode was good. The pacing was good, the voice actors are decent, the ending song is nice (nothing tops Endless Story though). The only complaint I have is that in the transition, Ai Yazawa's style is lost.

Digimon Savers 1 - I used to follow Digimon obsessively (01 was great, 02 a bit disappointing, Tamers my favorite, Frontier totally sucked). Anyway, first episode of this series was okay. So far, neither two of the three main characters are that interesting to me. Maybe they will grow on me later. Character designs...it doesn't look that great to me. I guess I was too used to the character style of the old seasons. The songs aren't great either. Digimon songs were so good back then. I'll watch this no matter what though and maybe as it continues, it will become as great as Tamers.

New Anime Season

Saw the first episodes of Host Club, Kiba and Zegapain.

Host Club 1 - Quite pleased with this first episode. I remember reading the first chapter of the manga and I didn't like it (okay, I admit I didn't even finish reading the entire chapter). Animation is good and so far Haruhi seems like a fun character. I was quite surprised to find out why light bulbs kept going on throughout the episode. I didn't see that twist coming.

Kiba 1 - It was a decent first episode. I am intrigued with what's going on with the story, but the main character Zed is just so freaking annoying to me and the dialogue was kinda blah (maybe it was the fansub translation). I don't think I can endure Zed so I'll just forget about this series.

Zegapain 1 - I have read blog reviews on the first episode and I think it is overrated. While it certainly was not a bad episode, it wasn't anything impressive. I have nothing to complain about it so I'll give it a couple more episodes. I haven't seen a mecha series since Stellvia and hopefully this will get better.

I guess I'll give an update on what I have been up to in terms of anime and manga.

Anime - Not really watching much anime nowadays. There isn't that many series that interest me. The last series I really enjoyed watching was Mushishi. I heard it is starting up again with episodes 21-26 in May or June. Definitely looking forward to that. In term of the Spring 2006 anime season, I don't know if I'll watch anything yet. There is so many new anime this season. It is pretty overwhelming to pick ones that I want to watch.

Manga - In terms of manga, I still really like Bleach and Hunter X Hunter. Unfortunately, the latter is on a long hiatus right now. I started reading Clamp's TRC and xxxholic and I love them! Just really good characters...that's kinda the reason I am reading them. I also started Nana and it has probably become one of my favorite shoujo manga now. As for POT, given up on it. So ridiculous and stupid...

I'll try to update this LJ more often, but I doubt anyone is actually reading it anyway.

So Kikumaru won his singles 2 match against Kai, 7-6. That means Seigaku now has a 3-0 lead and a spot in the quarterfinals, most probably against one of these 3 teams (Tsubakikawa, Hyoutei, Shishigaku). I hope it is Hyoutei, but...

I am disappointed that Kikumaru won because that means D1 and S1 are meaningless now. Also, aside from Tezuka, no other Seigaku regular has lost a singles match! That is an amazing record, but a bit ridiculous. Let someone lose a singles match already! *sigh* I hope we get to see Kite vs. Inui or Tezuka.
